Jojoba is almost identical to skin's sebum, the stuff that our glands secrete to hydrate our hair and skin, so it's great as a postwinter reviver, says Billy Lowe, a celebrity stylist in Los Angeles. You matter not because of what you do or who you know or because of how much you earn. You matter simply because you exist. How long has it been since someone told you that? How long has it been since you told yourself that?

In this world of crazy schedules, 24/7 electronic access and the drive to have more, we run ourselves into the ground trying to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. Heaven forbid we say “No” to something and risk disappointing someone. Since we have become amazingly good “Yes” machines there is one thing that is most certainly allowed to fall by the way side: self care.

At some point in our growing up process we decided that it was O.K. for us to go without as long as everyone else got what they needed. Well, to put it in the immortally blunt words of Dr. Phil, “How’s that workin’ for you?”

Giving and giving and giving is great as long as you have something left to give. But what happens when you don’t take the time to refuel your own gas tank? Think about your car. It runs just fine when there is fuel in the tank, but when that fuel gets low enough, a little light comes on to let you know you had better get some gas if you want to keep going.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a benign little light that comes on when we are running low on fuel. Sure our stomachs growl when we need food but what about when we need rest or alone time? If we run on emotional fumes for too long our warning light might look like an illness or an injury. Something will happen to cause us to have to stop and take care of ourselves.

Carving out some “Me” time can be tricky so here are some steps to get you started:

1. Choose to believe that your self care is important. That may sound obvious but can you honestly say you already believe that? It really is a choice for you to make. Even before you try to change your behavior, you have to change your thinking. Spend a few minutes every day reviewing all the reasons you would benefit from taking better care of yourself (better relationships, better health, more fun, feeling honored, more enthusiasm, etc). Do this for 21 days before you even check you calendar to schedule “Me” time.

2. Now, take action! Now that you believe you deserve some of your time just as much as everyone else does, it’s time to put your new belief into action.

a. Think about what it is that would make you feel pampered and reenergized. If it’s been so long you can’t remember what you get excited about, think back to what you used to love doing when you were young. It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. If tending orchids makes your heart sing, go for it! Maybe you love the feeling of volunteering. Write down whatever comes to mind so that you’ll have a whole list of activities. That way depending on how much time you have available, you have something fabulous to choose! Whatever makes you smile on the inside as well as the outside counts.

b. Now that you know what you want to do, schedule some time for yourself. Start out small if this part feels scary. Even putting 15 minutes aside for yourself is a good start. When done consistently, it will allow you to cross that line from someone who doesn’t have time for themselves to being someone who DOES have time for themselves.

Why not be proactive about refueling your tank? Take time to enjoy something you’re passionate about, reconnect with friends or schedule a message to give all your senses a treat! You and everyone you serve will benefit greatly if you schedule time for whatever it is that fills you up before you schedule the meetings and the recitals and the errands and the……

Remember, you matter.

Thank you Polly Giblin.

Polly Giblin is a life coach so that she can offer others the chance to put themselves on the front burner.
